Florida Claim Definitions & Deadlines

In Florida, claims fall into the following categories:

Supplemental Claim

A supplemental claim is a request for additional compensation arising from the same peril after the insurer has already adjusted the claim, or for additional costs incurred during repairs or replacement under a previously reported and timely filed claim.

Deadline: Supplemental claims must be filed within 18 months from the Date of Loss (an additional 6 months beyond the reopening deadline).

Reopened Claim

A reopened claim is a claim that was previously closed by the insurer and later reopened at the insured’s request for additional costs related to loss or damage that had already been disclosed to the insurer.

Deadline: Claims must be Reported or reopened within 1 year from the Date of Loss.

Act Quickly

Time is critical when reopening or supplementing an insurance claim. Missing these deadlines could mean forfeiting money you are rightfully owed. Protect your investment— hire a professional public adjuster as soon as possible to ensure your claim is handled properly.
